ALIEN: EARTH and Cliffhangers, Revisited

Season 1 of ALIEN: EARTH, which I was loving (and still mostly do) ended on what I would call a terrible decision. That terrible decision was the terrible decision that showrunners keep making because they saw STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION one time.

I was going to go on another rant about cliffhangers, but I realized I had a perfectly good one raring to go from a blog I posted like ten years ago when I got mad about the infamous Walking Dead cliffhanger.

The nice thing is, all the lessons are still evergreen, so I’ve done a fresh draft on those ideas. I’ve also added a new section about forgiving cliffhangers based on time and production schedules, which is more relevant in the “8 episodes every three years” streaming era.

Alright, let’s dive into it. But first we start with a simple question, before we can get going:

STAR TREK: GENERATIONS is Great (Even if You Don’t Like the Message)

This week I take on the haters of STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, the very first cinematic adventure of the Enterprise-D and the “Next Generation” crew.

I’m not actually attacking any haters, I don’t mind if you don’t like it. BUT, I do think the movie has been judged unfairly, and it’s actually a masterpiece of messaging. The problem? The message flies in the face of popular franchise (and fan) conventions. Not fan conventions like San Diego Comic Con, I mean, what people expect.

However, the message is an important one. And as I find myself pondering–like Picard–that perhaps I have more days behind me than in front of me, it’s a message I find comforting.

Maybe you will, too. But if you don’t, no refunds.

2025 in Books (Part 1): Recommendations and Reviews

It’s July, so time to show off some of the novels I’ve read this year, like a cat stacking up dead lizards on your porch.

My plan this year was simple: read 24 books (double what I read last year), and only pull books I already own but haven’t read yet. One, to actually get to some of the books I’ve been gifted over the past couple decades, and two, because money.

Overall, it’s been a solid six months. Almost all bangers.

Alright, here we go:

Think me or my books are neat? I’ve created a page to finally answer the question: “How Can I Help?”

Check it out for links to review any of the books, do a testimonial, or spread the word. I basically can’t do this without you, the readers. Please consider taking a moment, even just to leave a star rating somewhere.

Your voice can change my life and help me write more books, and it’s never been more appreciated.

2021 in Movies: The Good, the Bad, and the Okay

The year 2021 is on its deathbed, thank Crom, and a decent crop of dorky-ass movies came out while we were all drowning in misery.

I’m gonna break down the ones I checked out, weighing their sins and pronouncing judgement, like Anubis. You can disagree with my proclamations if you like, but why make that choice?

Alright, here we go.

What Am I Up To?

So, what have I been up to lately? This:

What I’m Reading

Image result for dark tower

I just plowed through the entire Dark Tower series by Stephen King for the second time, and I have some shocking and terrible news for you: it’s still incredible. I first started reading the series when I was around 15 years old, and was forced to wait painfully for the last four books to come out.

Being able to read them all back-to-back provided a slightly different experience. But, overall, yeah. I think it’s still my favorite book series of all time. It’s so epic and surreal and strange, with a truly unique world (well, worlds) that feel 100% real. Even the weirder meta elements in the last few books work really well for me.

Another Monday, Post-Evisceration

Stomach is starting to heal from the hernia surgery. Turns out it’s painful for your guts to come out, and JUST AS PAINFUL to put them back in again. So, you know. Don’t do that.

Keep that shit on the inside, if you have the option.

Because I’ve been anchored to the couch for medicinal reasons, been watching a shitload of The Walking Dead, old episodes, and they just remind me how great season 1 and season 2 were.
